Abstract

Great-tailed Grackles (Quiscalus mexicanus), known for their omnivorous diet, have demonstrated diverse foraging strategies, including preying on insects, reptiles, and occasionally bird nests. Rare observations have noted large males hunting small passerines, but such behaviors in females remain undocumented. In May 2016, in El Paso, Texas, I observed a female Great-tailed Grackle capturing and consuming a House Sparrow (Passer domesticus), marking the first recorded instance of such predation by a female of the species. This incident, documented on video ( https://osf.io/pqtkh), occurred during an unusually dry period, which suggests that extreme weather conditions may influence resource-seeking behaviors. These findings challenge the notion that predation is confined to male grackles, and this note proposes that both sexes may engage in opportunistic predation under resource-scarce conditions.
