Blockeel, T. L. & Nieuwkoop, J. A. W. 2016. The bryophyte flora of Lesbos, Greece. — Herzogia 29: 1–34.

A complete list of the bryophytes known from Lesbos, Greece, is presented, of which 122 taxa are new reports for the island. Campylopus brevipilus, Entosthodon schimperi and Fissidens fontanus are new to Greece, and the occurrence of Entosthodon obtusus in Greece is confirmed. Fissidens rufulus, Grimmia nutans and Pohlia nutans are new to the Greek Aegean islands, and the presence of Campylostelium pitardii and Grimmia montana is noteworthy.

Priede, A. & Mežaka, A. 2016. Invasion of the alien moss Campylopus introflexus in cutaway peatlands. — Herzogia 29: 35–51.

Campylopus introflexus is an invasive alien moss in Europe and North America considered as a threat to biodiversity, especially in dune habitats. In this study, we found that C. introflexus is a common pioneer species in vacuumharvested peatlands in Latvia occurring on dry peat substrates and peat substrates with highly fluctuating water tables, but not on waterlogged peat surfaces. The spread of this species is limited by dense vegetation cover, shading and high water table, but it is tolerant of different peat substrate properties and a wide range of pH values. The invaded plant communities do not represent a species composition typical of natural bogs and fens. C. introflexus can be considered as a successful pioneer invader on cutaway peatlands with minor impacts on vegetation diversity or particular native species and cannot be considered as a threat to peatlands. In cutaway peatlands, the vegetation recovery toward formation of bog or fen communities is hindered by lowered water table, not by invasion of C. introflexus.

Blockeel, T. L. 2016. The mosses Aschisma carniolicum, Campylostelium strictum and Timmiella flexiseta on the Eastern Aegean Islands, new to Greece, and a second locality for Syntrichia latifolia. — Herzogia 29: 52–58.

The mosses Campylostelium strictum and Timmiella flexiseta, previously known from Macaronesia and the western Mediterranean region are reported new to Greece from the Eastern Aegean islands. The moss Aschisma carniolicum is also new to Greece, and an extant Greek site for Syntrichia latifolia on the island of Samos is confirmed. Some diagnostic characters for these species are illustrated from the Greek material.

Borovichev, E. A. & Bakalin, V. A. 2016. On Mannia triandra (Aytoniaceae, Marchantiophyta) in Eastern Asia. — Herzogia 29: 59–65.

Mannia triandra is a rare and poorly known taxon in Asia. Some specimens of this species have been misidentified and considered as other taxa and vice versa. During fieldwork and herbarium studies, we revealed hitherto unknown occurrences of M. triandra in Magadan Province and the Korean Peninsula. The locality in the Republic of Korea belongs to a so-called wind-hole area and confirms the high value of such kind of habitats at low elevations in temperate East Asia as refugia for rare alpine plants. The paper provides a morphological description and figures based on the studied collections and reviews the ecological preferences and distribution of M. triandra in eastern Asia.

Peterka, T., Plesková, T., Palpurina, S., Kalníková, V., Lazarević, P. M. & Hájek, M. 2016. Meesia triquetra, a new relict moss for the Republic of Macedonia. — Herzogia 29: 66–71.

Meesia triquetra is a circumpolar boreo-arctic moss species typical for well preserved fens, and is rare in southern Europe. During field research on mire vegetation in the Balkan Peninsula, a population of Meesia triquetra was found at the Begovo pole wetland in the Jakupica Mountains. It is the first record of this species for the Republic of Macedonia. A description of the locality, ecological conditions and vegetation is presented. The moss grows here in the sedge-moss vegetation similar to temperate fens of the alliance Caricion davallianae. The vegetation with Meesia triquetra in Begovo pole was evaluated in the context of fen vegetation more generally in the Balkans using detrended correspondence analysis. The study site appeared to be similar to other Balkan calcium-rich brown-moss fens without calcium carbonate precipitation. This habitat resembles the optimum habitat of the species in central and northern Europe.

The original material of Brachythecium rhynchostegioides, an undescribed moss species from southern Africa, was investigated. The material actually represents Isopterygium tenerifolium and this is the first record of this neotropical species in Africa. The global distribution of I. tenerifolium is mapped and Afro-American moss disjuncts are briefly discussed.

Yin, X.-B., Zhang, L.-N., Shu, L. & Zhu, R.-L. 2016. Two new records of Riccardia (Aneuraceae, Marchantiophyta) to China collected from Hainan Island. — Herzogia 29: 79–86.

Two liverworts, Riccardia inconspicua and R. glauca (Aneuraceae), are reported for China for the first time. The former belongs to Riccardia subgenus Thornoneura, which is characterized by the mucilage papillae present only along margins of the thallus and vermiform to convolute oil bodies. This subgenus is newly recorded from China. Riccardia glauca is recorded outside Japan for the first time. Illustrations and descriptions based on the Chinese specimens are provided.

Wurzel, W. 2016. Bemerkenswerte Funde von Moosen und Flechten aus Nordostbayern. — Herzogia 29: 87–96.

In den letzten Jahren konnten verschiedene bemerkenswerte Moose und Flechten in Nordostbayern festgestellt werden. Die Arten sind regional oder bayernweit selten, teilweise handelt es sich auch um Erstfunde für das Gebiet. Die aktuellen Nachweise von einer Lebermoos-, fünf Laubmoos- und 21 Flechtenarten sowie von drei calicioiden Pilzen werden beschrieben.

Neuwirth, G. & Aptroot, A. 2016. Cryptothecia stockeri (Arthoniales, Arthoniaceae), a new corticolous lichen species from the Seychelles. — Herzogia 29: 97–102.

A new corticolous representative of the lichenized ascomycete genus Cryptothecia is described from the Seychelles Islands. Distinguishing characters are the small ascospores, the brownish dotted surface of the ascigerous areas and the occurrence of psoromic acid. The ecology of the new species is discussed and an identification key to all Cryptothecia species currently known from the Seychelles Islands is provided.

The corticolous Verrucaria juglandis is described as new to science. It grows on Juglans regia roots along river banks, infrequently submerged, in a riparian forest. It is associated with lichens that are normally saxicolous.

Kanigowski, P., Flakus, A., Oset, M., Kowalewska, A., Rykaczewki, M., & Kukwa, M. 2016. The lichen family Parmeliaceae in Poland. Xanthoparmelia species containing usnic acid. — Herzogia 29: 108–119.

In a study of the Xanthoparmelia species containing usnic acid in Poland, six taxa have been recognized. Xanthoparmelia plittii is new to Poland. Some of the material is referred to as X. aff. cumberlandia. Xanthoparmelia conspersa is the most common species of the group in Poland (c. 67% of all records). Xanthoparmelia angustiphylla is widespread, but less common (c. 20% of all records). The remaining Xanthoparmelia taxa in Poland, i.e. X. aff. cumberlandia, X. mougeotii, X. plittii and X. stenophylla, are rare or very rare in the country. The distribution and threat status of all taxa, their habitat requirements, morphology and secondary chemistry are discussed and notes on similar taxa are made.

Kossowska, M., Fałtynowicz, W. & Szczepańska, K. 2016. Current distribution and ecology of lichens in a biodiversity hotspot in the Mały Śnieżny Kocioł glacial cirque, Sudetes, Poland.—Herzogia 29: 120–136.

The results of lichenological studies conducted on a basalt vein in the Giant Mountains are presented. This site has been known since the 19th century for its rare lichens, as well as for being the locus classicus of more widely distributed taxa. As a result of investigations conducted in 2006 at 20 localities on the basalt intrusion, a total of 117 lichen and eight lichenicolous fungi taxa were discovered. Rhizocarpon anaperum is reported as new in Poland. The results confirm the uniqueness of the basalt vein and its importance for biodiversity in Central Europe. The total number of taxa known from this site increased to 205, but 80 species previously reported were not rediscovered during this study; their absence is probably due to anthropogenic changes in the natural environment, which in the 1970s proved to be an ecological disaster. The greatest loss was sustained by hydrophytic lichens associated with wet rock surfaces.

Ohmura, Y. & Mayrhofer, H. 2016. Protothelenella sphinctrinoides (Protothelenellaceae) new to Japan and new chemical features for several species in the genus. — Herzogia 29: 137–142.

Protothelenella sphinctrinoides is newly reported for Japan (Hokkaido and central Honshu). It is a bryophilous lichen in arctic-alpine to boreal-montane and circumpolar regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Japanese collections were found on the bryophytes Andreaea rupestris var. fauriei, Cephalozia otaruensis, Dicranum viride var. hakkodense and Jungermannia sp. growing on soil or rock in alpine areas. Although no chemical substance has been reported for this species previously, an unidentified substance that can react C red was detected in all specimens collected in Europe and Japan. Other species of Protothelenella which also give a C red reaction are discussed.

The results of lichenological excursions of the 19th Symposium of Baltic Mycologists and Lichenologists (BMLS) in Latvia, Kurzeme region, 22–26 September 2014, are reported. A list of 290 species is presented, of which 238 are lichenized, 43 lichen-inhabiting, and nine saprotrophic fungi: ninety-one species are new to Latvia, twelve of which (Caloplaca duplicata, Cresporhaphis wienkampii, Ellisembia lichenicola, Gallowayella weberi, Gregorella humida, Lichenochora weillii, Parmelia serrana, Polycauliona phlogina, Reconditella physconiarum, Stictis brunnescens, Thelocarpon superellum, and Verrucaria tectorum) are also new for the Baltic States. Athallia alnetorum is reported here for the first time in northern Europe. The presence of Ochrolechia androgyna s. str., Athallia holocarpa and A. pyracea is confirmed for Latvia, and Parmelia submontana is reported as a new host for Homostegia piggotii.

Data on 17 species of lichenized and lichenicolous fungi from Belarus are presented, of which three lichens (Fuscidea pusilla, Protoparmelia hypotremella, and Ropalospora viridis) and 13 lichenicolous fungi (Abrothallus cladoniae, Acremonium lichenicola, Arthonia coronata, Epicladonia simplex, Intralichen lichenicola, Lichenochora obscuroides, Lichenoconium erodens, L. lecanorae, L. pyxidatae, Lichenosticta alcicornaria, Lichenostigma alpinum, Pyrenochaeta xanthoriae, and Syzygospora physciacearum) are new to the country. The facultatively lichenicolous fungus Taeniolina scripta is reported on lichens for the first time from Belarus.

Seventy six taxa are reported from 20 localities in Greece. Six taxa are new to Attica (Caloplaca herbidella, Cladonia foliacea, C. subrangiformis, Fulgensia bracteata, Pertusaria amara and Ramalina fastigiata), one is new to the Saronic Gulf island of Aegina (Cladonia foliacea), one is new to the NE Aegean island Lesvos (Umbilicaria spodochroa), and three and 22 taxa are new to the Dodecanese Islands of Kos and Rhodes, respectively (Kos: Arthonia cf. punctiformis, Arthopyrenia punctiformis and Collema crispum var. metzleri; Rhodes: Arthonia meridionalis, Aspicilia calcarea var. reagens, Bacidia incompta, B. laurocerasi, B. punica, Caloplaca aurantia, C. pyracea, Catillaria nigroclavata, Collema cristatum var. marginale, C. subnigrescens, Dirina massiliensis, Gyalecta truncigena, Lecanora horiza, Leptogium massiliense, Milospium graphideorum, Opegrapha celtidicola, Physcia adscendens, Rinodina septentrionalis, Schismatomma decolorans, Thelopsis isiaca, Vouauxiella lichenicola and Xanthoria calcicola). Umbilicaria spodochroa is confirmed for Greece.

During extensive field research on cryptogams of the lower Ibar Valley in Central—SW Serbia three moss species were recorded new to the bryophyte flora of Serbia. These are Dialytrichia mucronata, Grimmia lisae and Gymnostomum viridulum.

Müller, F. & Flügel, H.-J. 2016. New records of bryophytes from the biosphere reserve Kafa in Ethiopia. — Herzogia 29: 190–195.

In December 2014 the Nature Conservation Association of Germany (NABU) organized for 29 experts a ten-day excursion to the biosphere reserve Kafa in the montane rainforests region of southwest Ethiopia. Although no bryologist was part of the team, several bryophyte specimens were obtained. Overall, there were 13 liverwort and 24moss species among the collection including five mosses (Brachymenium rigidum, Campylopus flaccidus, Chryso-hypnum frondosum, Pelekium chenagonii, Pterogoniadelphus assimilis) that are new for the bryophyte flora of Ethiopia.

Breuss, O. 2016. Involucropyrenium romeanum is the correct name for I. squamulosum (lichenised Ascomycota, Verrucariaceae). — Herzogia 29: 196–197.

The new combination Involucropyrenium romeanum (de Lesd.) Breuss is introduced for the pyrenocarpous lichen previously known as Verrucaria squamulosa or Involucropyrenium squamulosum, respectively.

Ossowska, E. & Kukwa, M. 2016. Parmelia barrenoae and P. pinnatifida, two lichen species new to Poland. — Herzogia 29: 198–203.

Parmelia barrenoae and P. pinnatifida are reported as new to Poland. Parmelia barrenoae is known from 85 records and is widely distributed throughout Poland. Parmelia pinnatifida, by contrast, is a rare species recorded only in mountain areas. The general distribution of both species, their habitat requirements, morphology, secondary chemistry, and differences compared to similar taxa are discussed.

Kossowska, M. 2016. Atla wheldonii, a rare pyrenocarpous lichen species new to Poland. — Herzogia 29: 204–206.

Atla wheldonii is reported for the first time from Poland. This species was found in a calcareous zone of the Góry Kaczawskie Mountains (the Sudetes, SW part of the country), growing on soil in the bottom of an abandoned marble quarry. Brief characteristics and notes on habitat preferences and general distribution of the species are given.
