In 1977, a pecan pest management program was started in Alabama. Development and refinement continued through 1979. The program became operational statewide in 1980. Insect scouting, disease prediction, weed control, and vertebrate control have all been integral parts of the interdisciplinary effort. Successful alternatives to preventative spray schedules were developed by Extension Specialists and accepted by growers. The program has provided equal or better pest control with lower pesticide and energy expenditures.
