The antimicrobial activity of substances present in the egg wax of Amblyomma cajennense (Fabricius) was studied, focusing on bacteria, fungi and yeast. Wax was extracted using chloroform/methanol (2:1), and antimicrobial activity was evaluated by the solid culture diffusion assay method, with evaluations at 24, 48 and 72 hours after inoculation. The best results were obtained against yeasts, fungi and Gram-positive bacteria. For enteroviruses, no cytophatic effect in Vero cell cultures was observed for at least 48 hours, and the cell morphology was preserved, suggesting a very interesting potential virustatic activity.
Asca nelsoni sp. nov. is described from Costa Rica, from within domatia on leaves of coffee plants, Coffea arabica L. (Rubiaceae), and compared with morphologically similar species A. brachychaeta Hurlbutt, A. citriHurlbutt and A. elongata (Berlese).
The oribatid mite genus Separatoppia currently comprises four previously described species. We describe a new species, Separatoppia horvathaesp. nov., collected from soil in the Harenna forest within the Bale Mountains National Park (southeastern Ethiopia). This new species differs from its congeners by the extremely long sensilli. We present the first description of the ovipositor, gnathosoma and leg setation and solenidia of a Separatoppia species.
A new species of oribatid mite belonging to the family Galumnidae, Psammogalumna iranicasp. nov., is described from Iran. The new species is characterized by the long and ciliated sensillus with a dilated head. An amended diagnosis for Psammogalumna is proposed.
This paper deals with the water mite species of the Sperchon denticulatus-species group (Acari, Hydrachnidia, Sperchontidae) from Turkey and Iran. Sperchon akdagensisAşçi, Bursali & Özkan, 2010 is synonymized with S. hibernicus Halbert, 1944; S. cf. senguniÖzkan, 1982 is reported for the first time for Iran.
The genus DenheyernaxoidesSmiley, 1992 is recorded for the first time from Ukraine. The female of Denheyernaxoides brevirostris (Canestrini, 1885) is redescribed, based on specimens from the Crimea. The larva and deutonymph of this species are described for the first time. The author considers the subfamilyDenheyernaxoidinae Smiley, 1992 as a separate tribe (Denheyernaxoidini stat. nov.) in the subfamily Cunaxoidinae Den Heyer, 1979. A key to the Palaearctic cunaxid genera of the subfamily Cunaxoidinae Den Heyer, 1979 is provided.
Podapolipus kurosai spec. nov. (Acari: Podapolipidae) is described, illustrated and compared with related Podapolipus species from Orthoptera and Blattodea. Podapolipus kurosai is a subpronotal parasite of the pigmy grasshopper Phloeonotus humilis Gerstaecker collected in Swaziland, Southern Africa. This is the first record of a podapolipid mite from Tetrigidae.
This study deals with a new stigmaeid records for the Turkish fauna, Storchia ardabiliensisSafasadati, Khanjani, Razmjou & Doğan 2010. The variations in the number of genital, aggenital and external clunal setae of Storchia ardabiliensis and S. robustus are presented based on the examination of 76 females.
Aegyptobia yertlesp. nov. from Calytrix fraseri is described from adult females, deutonymphs and protonymphs. The palp and leg chaetotaxy is presented and reviewed for an additional 31 species of Aegyptobia. Of these species, 15 have a palp and leg chaetotaxy identical to A. yertlesp. nov. Amongst the remaining 16 species, there are 17 different variable setae. Within Aegyptobia, the greatest number of setae lost by any one species is eight. These results show that leg chaetotaxy is an informative addition to descriptions in the Tenuipalpidae. With respect to Aegyptobia, we suggest that leg chaetotaxy could help subdivide this large genus.
Dolichotetranychus kermanicus sp. nov. is described and illustrated based on female specimens collected from soil under a citrus tree, in the countryside surrounding Bam, Kerman Province in Iran. A key to all known species of the genus is provided.
