A new replacement name, Frederickia nom. n., is proposed for the preoccupied genus name Rindgea Ferguson, 2008 (Lepidoptera: Geometridae), and the 14 species previously in that genus are combined with the new name, as follows: Frederickia s-signata (Packard, 1873), comb. n.; Frederickia hypaethrata (Grote, 1881), comb. n.; Frederickia cyda (Druce, 1893), comb. n.; Frederickia maricopa (Hulst, 1898), comb. n.; Frederickia nigricomma (Warren, 1904), comb. n.; Frederickia parcata (Grossbeck, 1908), comb. n.; Frederickia subterminata (Barnes & McDunnough, 1913), comb. n.; Frederickia stipularia (Barnes & McDunnough, 1913), comb. n.; Frederickia flaviterminata (Barnes & McDunnough, 1913), comb. n.; Frederickia ballandrata (Wright, 1923), comb. n.; Frederickia indeterminata (McDunnough, 1939), comb. n.; Frederickia piccoloi (Rindge, 1976), comb. n.; Frederickia disparcata (Ferguson, 2008), comb. n.; and Frederickia prolificata (Ferguson, 2008), comb. n.
Ferguson (2008: 322), in his revision of the North American Geometridae moth fauna, described a new genus, Rindgea Ferguson, 2008, and fixed as its type species Eubolia cyda Druce, 1893 (Fig. 1), by original designation. He included 14 species in the new genus and classified it in the subfamily Ennominae and tribe Macariini. The species of this genus feed on desert Fabaceae and occur mainly in the south-western USA and Mexico (Ferguson 2008). The genus was named to honour American lepidopterist Frederick H. Rindge (1921–1996).
During the preparation of the “Online taxonomic facility of geometrid moths” (see Rajaei et al. 2022), it was noted that Rindgea Ferguson, 2008 is a junior homonym of Rindgea Johnson, 1993, a New World genus in the butterfly family Lycaenidae. Rindgea Johnson, 1993 is currently considered as a junior synonym of Nicolaea Johnson, 1993 (Lamas 2004).
As requested by the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN 1999, Article 60), we propose Frederickia nom. n. as a new replacement name for Rindgea Ferguson, 2008, respecting the original intent behind the naming of this genus by Ferguson (2008).
In consequence of the new replacement name for Rindgea, the following new combinations are established (original genus given in parentheses):
Frederickia s-signata (Packard, 1873) (Macaria), comb. n.
Frederickia hypaethrata (Grote, 1881) (Phasiane), comb. n.
Frederickia cyda (Druce, 1893) (Eubolia), comb. n.
Frederickia maricopa (Hulst, 1898) (Diastictis), comb. n.
Frederickia nigricomma (Warren, 1904) (Semiothisa), comb. n.
Frederickia parcata (Grossbeck, 1908) (Sciagraphia), comb. n.
Frederickia subterminata (Barnes & McDunnough, 1913) (Macaria), comb. n.
Frederickia stipularia (Barnes & McDunnough, 1913) (Macaria), comb. n.
Frederickia flaviterminata (Barnes & McDunnough, 1913) (Macaria), comb. n.
Frederickia ballandrata (Wright, 1923) (Phasiane), comb. n.
Frederickia indeterminata (McDunnough, 1939) (Semiothisa), comb. n.
Frederickia piccoloi (Rindge, 1976) (Semiothisa), comb. n.
Frederickia disparcata (Ferguson, 2008) (Rindgea), comb. n.
Frederickia prolificata (Ferguson, 2008) (Rindgea), comb. n.
