Abstract

Quarantine is a screening process intended to permit the introduction of desired exotic organisms into a new region while simultaneously excluding all undesirable contaminants. Contaminants to be excluded include arthropods, plant diseases, and other pests, parasitoids, and pathogens associated with or affecting the desired agents being introduced. Quarantine is achieved through use of buildings designed to prevent escape of undesired organisms and adherence by personnel to quarantine procedures. Foreign collectors enhance the effectiveness of quarantine through planning and consultation before and following foreign exploration, prompt notification concerning shipment, providing appropriate permits and relevant field notes in shipping packages, and supplying host colonies or rearing information to the quarantine laboratory.
