The persistence of the Microsporida in the environment is considered on the basis of (1) resistance of microsporidan spores to environmental conditions; (2) transmission and dispersal; (3) host range and infectivity; and (4) effect of the environment on the development of microsporidan infections. Specific examples are given for each of the above. Some naturally occurring microsporidan infections are also briefly discussed.
