This Special Issue volume (Special Issue 59) of the Journal of Coastal Research is dedicated to our dear friend, colleague, and mentor Dr. Nicholas C. Kraus (1942–2011). Dr. Kraus was the Program Manager of the Coastal Inlets Research Program at U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Research and Development Center in Vicksburg, Mississippi for over a decade. As a world reknowed researcher and educator, Dr. Kraus' tremendous contributions to coastal science and engineering range from basic theories on coastal hydrodynamics, sediment processes, and morphodynamics to broadly used engineering models and practice guidelines. He is a boundless inspiration to us all in the pursuit of new knowledge and innovative solutions to coastal problems. With great priviledge and honor, we hereby pay tribute to this tireless leader in the coastal sciences by dedicating this Special Issue in his memory.
