Two species of Rinodina are described as new to science (R. buckii and R. bullata) and a third is reported for the first time from arctic Canada (R. ochracea). Rinodina buckii, a sorediate species that resembles R. willeyi is described from disjunct localities in East Asia and the Appalachian Mountains of eastern North America. Rinodina bullata, a species with a peculiar minutely areolate thallus that is frequently sterile, is described from the central Appalachian Mountains of eastern North America. Rinodina ochracea, originally described from Greenland, is reported from the Northwest Territories in Canada. The newly described species are illustrated with both colour light micrographs (CLMs) and scanning electron micrographs (SEMs), and maps of their geographic distributions are presented. CLMs and SEMs of R. excrescens and R. willeyi are also provided for comparison.

Breuss, O. 2012. Coenogonium wernerhuberi, a new foliicolous lichen species (Coenogoniaceae) from Costa Rica. — Herzogia 25: 145–148.

A new lichenized ascomycete, Coenogonium wernerhuberi, is described from a hillside rainforest of southwestern Costa Rica. It is characterized by its hypophyllous growth, an inconspicuous, crustose thallus, small, wax-coloured apothecia, and long, fusiform ascospores. It is very similar to C. hypophyllum, from which it differs by having notably longer ascospores and smaller apothecia.

A list of 333 taxa of lichens and 23 species of lichenicolous fungi from Albania is presented including 226 taxa newly reported to the country. Hence the number of taxa recorded from Albania is raised by more than 100 percent. Species which are of special interest because of their biogeography and their connection with conservation priorities are Baeomyces placophyllus, Caloplaca diphyodes, C. fuscorufa, Degelia atlantica, D. plumbea, Evernia illyrica, Heterodermia speciosa, Lobaria amplissima, Lobarina scrobiculata, Leptogium palmatum, Lethariella intricata, Megalaria grossa, Pachyphiale carneola, Pannaria conoplea, Parmeliella triptophylla, Parmotrema robustum, Physcia biziana, Physconia venusta, Ramalina canariensis, Sticta fuliginosa, and Verrucaria limborioides.

A list of 160 taxa of lichens and a lichenicolous fungus from the Jakupica mountain range is presented, of which 20 lichens (Buellia aethalea, Caloplaca aurea, C. cacuminum, Candelariella reflexa, Cladonia caespiticia, Collema subflaccidum, Lecanora glabrata, L. persimilis, Lecidella achristotera, Lepraria caesioalba, Melanelia disjuncta, Pertusaria leioplaca, P. leucosora, Physconia detersa, Polyblastia microcarpa, Rhizocarpon obscuratum, Scoliciosporum umbrinum var. corticolum, Thelidium decipiens, T. incavatum, Verrucaria macrostoma) and the lichenicolous fungus (Carbonea vitellinaria) are new to Macedonia.

Surveys of lichens and lichenicolous fungi have been taking place in the U.S. state of Alaska for more than 160 years, but until now assessing the full extent of their diversity has been hampered by the lack of a comprehensive and synonymized baseline inventory. In this paper we will begin to redress this by resolving outstanding nomenclatural issues and providing voucher data for a forthcoming catalog of Alaskan lichens, specifically: 1) synonymization and/or resolution of status of species previously reported from Alaska, with emphasis on Alaskan types; 2) species new to the Alaska lichen biota; and 3) biogeographically significant new records from within Alaska. We report 91 species new to the flora of Alaska, including 65 lichens, three saprophytic calicioid fungi and 23 lichenicolous fungi. Of these, we report thirteen species, Biatora sphaeroidiza, Biatorella conspurcans, Chaenothecopsis arthoniae, Collemopsidium foveolatum, Dactylospora frigida, Halospora discrepans, Lecanora bryopsora, Opegrapha geographicola, Peltigera lyngei, Petractis clausa, Protoblastenia cyclospora, Thelocarpon impressellum and Usnea cylindrica as new to North America. In addition, Arthonia pruinata and Flavocetraria minuscula are new to Canada and Adelococcus alpestris new to the United States. We further place the following five names into synonymy: Lecania disceptans (Nyl.) Lynge [= Halecania alpivaga (Th.Fr.) M.Mayrhofer], Lecidea pallidella Nyl. [= Lecania subfuscula (Nyl.) S.Ekman], Lempholemma triptodes (Nyl.) Zahlbr. (= Leciophysma finmarkicum Th.Fr.), Polyblastia obtenta (Nyl.) Lynge [= Sporodictyon terrestre (Th.Fr.) S.Savić & Tibell], and Verrucaria pernigrata Nyl. [= Protothelenella sphinctrinoides (Nyl.) H.Mayrhofer & Poelt]. We propose restoring the long overlooked taxon Polyblastia exalbida (Nyl.) Zahlbr., currently known only from Alaska, to the North American lichen checklist. Finally, we propose the new combination Puttea caesia (Fr.) M.Svensson & T.Sprib. to replace Lecidea symmictella Nyl., which becomes a synonym.

A first checklist of lichens from Pakistan is presented. The species list is annotated with synonymy, literature references and specimens. Eighty-six lichen species, mostly collected by the second author, are reported for the first time from the country. The total number of lichen species known from Pakistan is currently 368.

BRACKEL, W. V. & ZIMMERMANN, D. G. 2012. A new species of Nectriopsis on Cladonia from Nordrhein- Westfalen (Germany). - Herzogia 25: 231–234.

The new species Nectriopsis cariosae is described. It is dwelling on the basal squamules of different species of Cladonia, mainly on C. cariosa. Nectriopsis cariosae is distinguished from N. cladoniicola, also living on Cladonia, by longer ascospores, the colour of the ascomata (orange vs. pink) and the collapsing peridial walls in dry state.

A list of 72 species of lichenicolous fungi known from the Caucasus is presented, including 21 species documented for the first time. Laeviomyces pertusariicola and Perigrapha superveniens are reported new to Russia and Asia, Sclerococcum simplex new to Asia and Unguiculariopsis lettaui new to Russia. The genus Laeviomyces is resurrected in order to distinguish L. pertusariicola.

BAUMANN, M. 2012. Distribution and phytosociology of Anastrepta orcadensis in the Ore Mountains (Saxony). - Herzogia 25: 245 –270.

The historical and current distribution of Anastrepta orcadensis in the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge, Saxony) is presented. The association of the species is demonstrated and discussed by 31 phytosociological relevés. The species grows in humid sites on humus and peat-soil in Norway spruce forests, which belongs to the phytosociological units Betulo carpaticae-Piceetum, Calamagrostio villosae-Piceetum and Bazzanio-Piceetum. In the Ore Mountains the species is endangered by changes of climate and habitat conditions.

GRUBER, J. P. & PEER, T. 2012. A contribution to the knowledge of the bryophyte flora of the mountains of North Pakistan (Autonomous Region of Gilgit-Baltistan). - Herzogia 25: 271–285.

This paper provides an annotated list of a collection of bryophytes found in the mountain area of North Pakistan. It is based on a total of 161 specimens (151 of mosses and 10 of liverworts), covering 76 species and 22 families. The plants were collected from selected sites over two field excursions in 1998 and 1999. The list represents about a fifth of the known Pakistani bryoflora. Four species on the list are recorded as new for Pakistan, three of these were already published in previous papers.

JOHN, V. & HAEDEKE, J. 2012. First record of Multiclavula mucida in Rheinland-Pfalz, with notes on distribution and conservation status of the species. - Herzogia 25: 287-292.

The basidiomycete lichen Multiclavula mucida, reported from an unusually low altitude, is new to Rheinland-Pfalz. Information on the distribution and vulnerability of this species is provided in the lichenological literature, but differs from that in the fungal literature. Following a period of decline, the lichen appears to be spreading; the causes for this are briefly discussed.
