Bees are important pollinators and are essential for the reproduction of many plants in natural and agricultural ecosystems. However, bees can have adverse ecological effects when introduced to areas outside of their native geographic ranges. Dozens of non-native bee species are currently found in North America and have raised concerns about their potential role in the decline of native bee populations. Osmia taurus Smith (Hymenoptera: Megachilidae) is a mason bee native to eastern Asia that was first reported in the United States in 2002. Since then, this species has rapidly expanded throughout the eastern part of North America. Here, we present a comprehensive review of the natural history of O. taurus, document its recent history of spread through the United States and Canada, and discuss the evidence suggesting its potential for invasiveness. In addition, we compare the biology and history of colonization of O. taurus to O. cornifrons (Radoszkowski), another non-native mason bee species now widespread in North America. We highlight gaps of knowledge and future research directions to better characterize the role of O. taurus in the decline of native Osmia spp. Panzer and the facilitation of invasive plant-pollinator mutualisms.

Sibling cannibalism has rarely been documented in the resource-based context of sibling rivalry. The solitary wasp Isodontia harmandi (Pérez) (Hymenoptera: Sphecidae) has an exceptional style of nursery ‘communal brood cells’, in which multiple larvae gregariously develop while relying on maternal prey provisioning. In this species there are several distinct features; e.g., cannibalism-driven brood reduction, single-sex broods, and mass provisioning. Rearing of the wasp larvae in artificial nest chambers provides the novel opportunity to study larval interactions under controlled conditions.To determine the factors that influence the occurrence of cannibalism and its timing, we conducted a rearing experiment using sib and non-sib pairs under two prey-availability treatments, and recorded the occurrence of cannibalism and the processes of larval growth and prey consumption over a 96-hr period. Cannibalism occurred more frequently in the low-prey treatment than in the high-prey treatment, and in female pairs than in male pairs. Cannibalism tended to occur earlier when the amount of prey remaining decreased rapidly. However, cannibalism did not occur only when all prey had been completely consumed, implying that it was not triggered directly by prey exhaustion. Cannibals were always larger than their victims, whose growth rates had often slowed before they were eaten.These results strongly imply that wasp larvae commit sibling cannibalism in the context of resource-based sibling rivalry, ensuring the double benefit of nutritional gains and reduced resource competition. We also investigated the possibility that wasp larvae monitor the size difference and/or body condition of brood-mates as an indicator of prey availability.

Female black widow spiders, Latrodectus hesperus Chamberlin and Ivie (Araneae: Theridiidae), are solitary predators of arthropods with no tolerance for intruders on the webs. In California, L. hesperus are found in urban and agricultural settings and can be a phytosanitary pest in fresh produce. Spatial separation of L. hesperus webs could be determined by seasonal population densities, with territorial competition expected under high densities in the environment. However, little is known about female-female communication behaviors in this species. In 1-hr laboratory observations, displays of female-female rivalry included production of vibrational signals in a majority (20 of 30) of trials. The number of signals produced by both females was highest during the initial 10 min of trials, with signaling rate (time interval between signals) peaking during the 40–50 min observation period. The overall ratio of signals produced by the resident female and the introduced female was about 5:1, with the number of signals produced by the resident female higher than the number of signals produced by the introduced female. Analysis of rivalry signals showed a peak in magnitude (about 0.4 m/s) ranging from 6 to 23 Hz and smaller peaks at about 29, 38, and 47 Hz. Collectively, these results demonstrate that female L. hesperus exhibit territorial rivalry and that female-female rivalry is mediated by emission of vibrational signals through the web. Understanding the mechanisms of intraspecific competition in L. hesperus is required for elucidating interspecific interactions in the environment and may lead to development of novel methods to prevent spiders from colonizing crops.

With the long-term goal of exploring the viability of conservation biological control of cabbage aphid Brevicoryne brassicae (L.) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) in the northeastern United States, adult syrphid flies (Diptera: Syrphidae) were observed on several species of annual insectary plants at farm sites in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. Insectary plant species included alyssum, Lobularia maritima (L.) (Brassicales: Brassicaceae), buckwheat, Fagopyrum esculentum (Moench) (Caryophyllales: Polygonaceae), phacelia, Phacelia tanacetifolia (Bentham) (Boraginales: Hydrophyllaceae), calendula, Calendula officinalis (L.) (Asterales: Asteraceae) and ammi, Ammi majus (L.) (Apiales: Apiaceae). Among these insectary plants, alyssum had the longest bloom period and attracted the most syrphids. We identified 21 species of syrphid flies from insectary plants. The three most prevalent species collected were the aphidophagous Toxomerus marginatus (Say) (Diptera: Syrphidae) (70.1% of samples) and T. geminatus (Say) (Diptera: Syrphidae) (8.8% of samples), as well as the non-aphidophagous Syritta pipiens (L.) (Diptera: Syrphidae) (13.1% of samples). The benefits of including these insectary plant species as a companion to Brassica (L.) (Brassicales: Brassicaceae) cropping systems are discussed.

The effects of two possible factors, prevention of pest immigration and enhancement of natural enemies, in suppressing onion thrips, Thrips tabaci L., were estimated in a small-scale experimental system of spring-planted onions intercropped with barley. The population dynamics of the thrips and their potential predatory natural enemies were investigated in four treatments: control (bare ground), insect net barrier, and onion-barley intercropping with or without trimming. We found that intercropping significantly suppressed onion thrips. It is unlikely that this effect was due to the prevention of thrip immigration because they seemed to move over the camouflage and/or physical barriers of the barley and the net barrier surrounding the onions easily. Intercropping with barley significantly increased hoverfly (Syrphidae) larvae numbers on onion leaves, and that of some groups of ground-dwelling predators such as large carnivorous ground beetles (Carabidae), ants (Formicidae), and wolf spiders (Lycosidae). We conclude that the suppression of thrips in this system was associated with the enhancement of hoverfly larvae abundance, mainly Sphaerophoria macrogaster (Thomson) (Syrphidae: Diptera) because they were observed together with thrips on onions and have been reported to predate thrips as well as aphids. Some hoverfly larvae on barley might move to nearby onions to search for new food sources and attack thrips.

Spatial repellents are emerging as a promising approach to reduce vector-disease burden; however, the evolution of genetically resistant mosquitoes decreases repellent efficacy. The development of flight chambers to investigate spatial repellent application techniques is vital for sustainable mosquito control. We present an air-dilution chamber as a novel bioassay to study mosquito flight behavior responses to chemical gradients of the volatile, pyrethroid transfluthrin (TF). Air dilution was used to simulate a larger environment of stable concentration gradients verified with carbon dioxide (CO₂) which was homogenously delivered and measured across the chamber to achieve a 5× inlet/outlet [CO₂] ratio with 0.17 m/s outlet velocity. Female Aedes (Ae.) aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae, Linnaeus, 1762) were exposed to volatilized TF paired with heat, CO_2, and Biogents-Sweetscent host-cues. Tandem solvent extraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SE-GC-MS) was used to quantify air samples taken during TF emanations with a limit of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) of 2 ± 1 and 5 ± 2 parts-per-trillion (ppt) TF, respectively. Homogenous air diluted emanation of the spatial repellent TF was at least twice that of the 5× CO₂ gradient with the same air flow in the chamber. The airborne TF concentrations the mosquitoes were exposed to range from 1 to 170 ppt. Video recordings of mosquito behavior during host-cues exposure revealed increased inlet activity, while exposure to TF protected host resulted in decreased inlet activity over time with inlet-outlet mosquito positional variation. This novel flight chamber design can simulate ‘long’-range exposure with simultaneous quantitation of airborne spatial repellent to understand dose-dependent effects on mosquito behavior.

Anastrepha obliqua Macquart (Diptera: Tephritidae) is a polyphagous species with hog plums (Spondias spp.) (Sapindales: Anacardiaceae) and mangoes (Mangifera indica L.) (Sapindales: Anacardiaceae) as primary host fruits. In this study, the olfactory preference of A. obliqua for three stages of ripeness of two mango cultivars (‘Coche' and ‘Ataulfo') was investigated. The female flies were more attracted to ripe ‘Coche' fruits compared to those ripe ‘Ataulfo’. Further, they were more attracted to the ‘Coche’ half-ripe and ripe fruits than to the unripe ones, but they did not discriminate among the stages of ripeness of ‘Ataulfo’ fruits. The male flies did not show preference for any specific mango cultivars or ripeness stage tested. Four compounds from ripe ‘Coche’ mangoes, and two from ripe ‘Ataulfo’ fruits were identified using coupled gas chromatography-electroantennographic (GC-EAD) recording and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. ‘Coche’ mango volatiles eliciting responses from the female antennae were ethyl butyrate, ethyl hexanoate, ethyl heptanoate, and ethyl octanoate. The two ‘Ataulfo’ mango volatiles were identified as 3-carene and ethyl octanoate. These compounds were absent in unripe mangoes of both cultivars. Synthetic blends of these compounds were attractive to females as mango extracts in field cage tests. Our results suggest that the olfactory preference of A. obliqua for attractive hosts is based on the presence or absence of the compounds associated with fruit maturity.

Although natural peatlands have been recognized as an important type of wetlands because they support high biodiversity and provide important ecosystem services, the value of peatlands both in biodiversity research and conservation is still largely underestimated. Our study characterizes the biodiversity and conservation value of Peşteana peat bog, an upland mesotrophic peat bog, located in the Southern Carpathians, Romania. More specifically, we: (1) characterized the invertebrate (i.e., top soil, surface litter, and plant-dwelling) and plant communities along a humidity gradient in Peşteana peat bog and nearby habitats (i.e., treeline, ecotone, lowland and highland meadow, and forest), (2) assessed the main environmental factors driving the invertebrate community diversity and composition, and (3) determined the relationship between invertebrate community diversity and vegetation, focusing on the top soil invertebrates. Our study revealed a high diversity of invertebrates spanning over 43 taxonomic groups and a high number of plant indicator species, emphasizing the role of natural peatlands in preserving diverse communities in a small area. The results showed that the composition of top soil invertebrate community was determined by depth of organic layer, vegetation cover, and soil compaction. We found that the diversity of top soil invertebrate community was strongly influenced by habitat type and soil attributes and weakly by vegetation. Overall, the invertebrate and plant communities showed different responses to habitat conditions along the humidity gradient. This highlights the importance of using a multi-community approach to support the design of effective conservation and management actions beneficial for a wide range of taxa.

The army cutworm, Euxoa auxiliaris (Grote), is a migratory noctuid that is both an agricultural pest and an important late-season food source for grizzly bears, Ursus arctos horribilis (Linnaeus, Carnivora: Ursidae), within the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Beyond the confirmation of the moths' seasonal, elevational migration in the mid-1900s, little else has been documented about their migratory patterns. To address this missing ecological component, we examined (1) migratory routes during their spring and fall migratory periods throughout their natal range, the Great Plains, and (2) natal origin at two of their summering ranges using stable hydrogen (δ²H) analyses of wings from samples collected within the areas of interest. Stable carbon (δ¹³C) and stable nitrogen (δ¹⁵N) analyses of wings were used to evaluate larval feeding habits of the migrants and agricultural intensity of natal origin sites, respectively. Results suggest that, rather than migrating exclusively east to west, army cutworm moths are also migrating north to south during their spring migration. Moths did not exhibit natal origin site fidelity when returning to the Great Plains. Migrants collected from the Absaroka Range had the highest probability of natal origin in Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, the most southern region of the Northwest Territories, and second highest probability of origin in Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho. Migrants collected in the Lewis Range had the highest probability of origin in the same provinces of Canada. Results suggest that migrants of the Absaroka Range fed exclusively on C3 plants as larvae and rarely fed in heavily fertilized agroecosystems.

Insects often harbor bacterial endosymbionts that provide them with nutritional benefit or with protection against natural enemies, plant defenses, insecticides, and abiotic stresses. Certain endosymbionts may also alter acquisition and transmission of plant pathogens by insect vectors. We identified bacterial endosymbionts from four leafhopper vectors (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) of ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma’ species by direct sequencing 16S rDNA and confirmed endosymbiont presence and identity by species-specific conventional PCR. We examined three vectors of Ca. Phytoplasma pruni, causal agent of cherry X-disease [Colladonus geminatus (Van Duzee), Colladonus montanus reductus (Van Duzee), Euscelidius variegatus (Kirschbaum)] – and a vector of Ca. Phytoplasma trifolii, the causal agent of potato purple top disease [Circulifer tenellus (Baker)]. Direct sequencing of 16S identified the two obligate endosymbionts of leafhoppers, ‘Ca. Sulcia’ and ‘Ca. Nasuia’, which are known to produce essential amino acids lacking in the leafhoppers’ phloem sap diet. About 57% of C. geminatus also harbored endosymbiotic Rickettsia. We identified ‘Ca. Yamatotoia cicadellidicola’ in Euscelidius variegatus, providing just the second host record for this endosymbiont. Circulifer tenellus harbored the facultative endosymbiont Wolbachia, although the average infection rate was only 13% and all males were Wolbachia-uninfected. A significantly greater percentage of Wolbachia-infected Ci. tenellus adults than uninfected adults carried Ca. P. trifolii, suggesting that Wolbachia may increase this insect’s ability to tolerate or acquire this pathogen. Results of our study provide a foundation for continued work on interactions between leafhoppers, bacterial endosymbionts, and phytoplasma.

Wood-feeding termites have a nitrogen-poor diet and have therefore evolved nitrogen conservation strategies. However, termite workers molt periodically, and throughout the lifetime of a colony, millions of exuviae, a nitrogen-rich resource, are produced by the colony. In Coptotermes Wasmann, workers foraging at remote feeding sites must return to the central part of the nest to molt, where the queen, king, eggs, and larvae are located. It was hypothesized that this molting-site fidelity is an efficient way to recycle nitrogen for reproduction and colony growth, as nestmates involved in exuviae consumption can directly transfer such resources to individuals engaged in reproduction (the queen) or growth (larvae). This study investigates whether incipient colonies of C. gestroi (Wasmann) can gain additional biomass when they are fed supplementary exuviae. Incipient colonies were reared in nitrogen-poor or nitrogen-rich conditions, and 0, 1, 5, or 10 exuviae were added to 3-month-old colonies. After 6.5 months, colonies reared in nitrogen-poor environments gained significantly more biomass when exuviae were added than colonies with no added exuviae. However, the addition of exuviae had no effect on colony growth for colonies reared in nitrogen-rich environments. In a second experiment, queens from colonies in which exuviae were effectively removed laid fewer eggs than queens from colonies in which exuviae were not removed. Therefore, consumption of exuviae from molting individuals by nestmates is an important part of the nitrogen recycling strategy in Coptotermes colonies, as it facilitates queen oviposition and colony growth, especially when such colonies have limited access to nitrogen-rich soils.

The Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama, 1908 (Hemiptera: Liviidae), is a phloem-feeding insect pest of Citrus L. (Sapindales: Rutaceae), Murraya J. Koenig ex L. (Sapindales: Rutaceae), and other Rutaceae, native to the Indian subcontinent and transmits the citrus greening pathogens (huanglongbing). We herein evaluate the occurrence of D. citri in Puerto Rico at a fine scale and the potential invasion history of the Caribbean from the native range. We found that the genetic diversity of D. citri in Puerto Rico, using the mitochondrial genetic marker CO1, indicated that the Caribbean haplotype is unique and more related to Southwest Asia haplotypes than other groups. Results then suggest that the invasion of the Caribbean did not occur from the United States. Also, we found that isothermality was the abiotic variable that influenced D. citri species distribution model performance the most in current and future climate change scenarios. Given the data available from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) for present D.citri reported occurrence, future projections suggest that climate change might promote an expansion of the pest to other Caribbean islands and Latin American countries. Still, it might elicit a range contraction across the Cordillera Central in Puerto Rico, possibly promoting citriculture. Regarding pest management strategies, we must consider a holistic approach to understanding D. citri invasion and resilience in novel habitats by including broader and more robust genetic population structure studies and if its current distribution reflects projected models across the neotropics.

El psílido asiático de los cítricos, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae), es un insecto que se alimenta del floema de plantas en los géneros Citrus, Murraya, entre otras rutáceas, nativo del subcontinente indio y sudeste asiático. Diaphorina citri transmite a las plantas de cítricos la bacteria patógena restringida al floema Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus, C. L. americanus y C. L. africanus, las cuales causan la enfermedad del enverdecimiento de los cítricos o huanglongbing. En este estudio evaluamos la ocurrencia de D. citri en la isla de Puerto Rico a una escala fina y la potencial historia de invasión del insecto hacia el Caribe desde su rango nativo. Encontramos que una visión integral de la diversidad genética de D. citri en Puerto Rico, utilizando el marcador genético mitocondrial CO1, indicó que el haplotipo del Caribe es único y está estrechamente relacionado con los haplotipos. Los resultados sugieren que la invasión hacia el Caribe no se produjo desde Estados Unidos, país que la especie había colonizado antes que el Caribe. Además, evaluamos qué condiciones ambientales influyen en la distribución de D. citri en Puerto Rico y América Latina. La isotermalidad fue la variable abiótica que más influyó en el rendimiento del modelo de distribución de la especie D. citri en los escenarios de cambio climático actuales y futuros. Según datos disponibles en el ‘Global Biodiversity Information Facility’ (GBIF) para la presencia reportada de D. citri, proyecciones futuras sugieren que el cambio climático podría promover una expansión de la plaga a otras islas del Caribe y países de América Latina, pero en Puerto Rico, podría provocar una contracción del área de distribución a través de la Cordillera Central, posiblemente promoviendo la agricultura de cítricos. Concluimos que, en términos de estrategias de manejo de la plaga, debemos considerar un enfoque holístico para entender la invasión y la resiliencia de D. citri en nuevos hábitats, incluyendo estudios más amplios y robustos de la estructura genética de la población y si su distribución actual refleja los modelos proyectados a través del neotrópico.

The US state of Georgia includes the range of several periodical cicada broods and is the southernmost state in which Brood X periodical cicadas emerge; however, no research has focused on this brood in this state. We used reports of sightings on social media, communication with the public, and our own searches to determine the geographic range in Georgia and timing of biological events. Both adults and exuviae were identified to species to determine the species makeup at those locations.The first Brood X adult was photographed on April 26 in Lumpkin County, and Magicicada septendecim L. was the most common species. Online records and site visits led to distribution records in nine counties, including six that provided no records in the 2004 emergence. Driving surveys revealed patchy distributions of chorusing adults and species distribution modeling further predicted locations where Brood X can be found in future surveys. We observed cicada oviposition scars at two locations and found no effect of host plant on presence or density of scars. Lastly, collections of dead adults showed female remains were less common and more likely to be dismembered. Further investigations of the periodical cicadas in Georgia are recommended to better understand the phenology, evolution, and ecology of these remarkable insects.

Habitat fragmentation is considered an important threat to biodiversity, increasing species exposure to edge effects. The Brazilian Cerrado savanna is considered a biodiversity hotspot and has been converted to small, isolated fragments due to human activities. Ant communities and colony survivorship are known to be affected by edge effects in Cerrado, but to date there is no information on the genetic diversity of ant colonies at the edge of fragmented areas. Here, we investigate if colony genetic diversity and structure of Odontomachus chelifer (Latreille) ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) are subject to edge effects in a Cerrado reserve in southeast Brazil. Using microsatellites, we evaluated the number of breeders (queens and males) and the genetic diversity in O. chelifer colonies located in the interior versus edge of a Cerrado fragment. All O. chelifer nests had multiple queens, which presented a low mating frequency. The number of breeders and most estimates of genetic diversity did not differ between colonies at the edge versus interior of the fragment. Genetic structure was not influenced by nest location as well. However, we detected a small and positive increase in the observed heterozygosity in colonies located at fragment edges. High heterozygosity is thought to be particularly important in fast-changing environments, such as edges, providing an advantage for genetic diversity. Further investigation is needed to assess in greater detail how habitat loss affects O. chelifer biology. Our study is a first step toward elucidating edge effects on genetic diversity of ant colonies, a topic still poorly explored in tropical environments.
